Emerson Selig (Father-in-Law): Nicolae was initially uncomfortable around Emerson, who was inclined to go into long, ponderous rants about conspiracy theories and esoteric science. Over time, Nicolae learned that he and his father-in-law had complimentary scientific interests. Very dangerous for us.

Jean Selig (Mother-in-Law) (Deceased): Jean couldn’t have been more pleased with her daughter’s choice of a husband, seeing her own marriage reflected in that of her daughter’s. Jean welcomed Nicolae into the family, as though she knew that her son-in-law and her husband would become scientific colleagues.

Piper Pastore (Wife): Piper and Nicolae met in New Mexico. Piper was there on an “artist retreat” (it was more of an excuse for Piper to sober up). Nicolae’s distracted, daydreaming nature was a counter balance to Piper, who often feels anxious and over-stimulated. Today, Nicolae’s absentmindedness and his obsession with sound research is starting to grate on Piper, who feels unappreciated. She may leave him.

Lucius Selig (Brother-in-Law): These two men will never get along. Nicolae saw through Lucius’ self-assured bravado almost immediately. He bit his tongue as Lucius founded the Power of Positive Mechanics church and started taking advantage of its followers. That tension may boil over now that the dispossessed Lucius is living in the family’s tiny Mendocino home.

Lex and Morgan Pastore (Son and Daughter): The twins are cursed with a father who is enthusiastic enough to pass along his scientific obsessions like a disease, but who is distracted enough to not teach them discipline. Lex’s bizarre experiments on the pet hamster Nimsesku are all the evidence we need of this dynamic. The experiments are as unethical as they are highly developed.

Morgan senses that something is wrong with her parents’ marriage, but, as a ten-year-old, she doesn’t understand relationships enough to make sense of what she observes around the home. The young empath’s confusion doesn’t stop her from internalizing every drop of tension in the house. She lacks the vocabulary for such things, but she wishes to transmute the pain into something organic and lovely. This is sentimental daydreaming we see in most children who are connected to the Anomaly. It’s not worth our attention for now.
