The Interface: Nicolae’s Instrument of Chaos

The Interface: Nicolae’s Instrument of Chaos

Last modified by Charter Agent YIL
Bloodline Abilities: Nicolae has control over the physical properties of sound. Through specialized instruments, Nicolae is able to distort the laws of Space/Time. Sound holds the Universe together. Someone with enough skill could use a device like The Interface to travel between stars, communicate with other realities, reanimate dead tissue, etc. In the hands of someone like Nicolae, sound will most likely punch a tattered hole straight through Space/Time. We’ve been lucky that sonics are an ignored field of study on Earth. Nicolae’s “Interface” changes that. Remove it from the home before someone else gets their hands on it. We have a spy in the Selig home, Nimsesku the family hamster. We could rig Nimsesku with a sonic bomb, a “shrieker.” If we were to detonate this bomb in the vicinity of Nicolae, it would ruin his hearing.* *(Administrator note: Denied. We need to keep our spy alive so he can keep sending us information about the other family members). Biography: Nicolae Pastore

Biography: Nicolae Pastore

Biography: Unlike his wife’s family, no one helped Nicolae learn that he was a gifted person. His powers developed in complete isolation. The only child to two emotionally distant parents, Nicolae grew up in a remote country home in Kansas, far away from children his own age. Nicolae was a chronic daydreamer, so much so that his parents worried there was something wrong with him. Nicolae had peculiar habits. He would turn the family television to static and watch the noise until his parents would make him stop. He would cup his hand in front of the screen, as though he were trying to catch the electric hiss from it in his hands. Determined to focus Nicolae’s attention on something useful, his father bought him a viola. That viola, more than his parents, raised Nicolae to be an agent of creative chaos. He quickly realized the tangible quality of the notes he played. He pictured himself reaching out and grasping them. He felt the notes, as solid as iron bars before they faded out of his hearing. One night, after a fight with his mother, Nicolae ran into his room and picked up his viola, sawing one ragged, angry note against the strings. As the note was played his door, seemingly on its own, slammed shut. Pictures fell off Nicolae’s bedroom wall. From then on, Nicolae focused his thoughts on that moment while he played. His sessions on the viola sounded like caterwauling noise to anyone else, but Nicolae was in ecstasy, summoning musical forces around him like a localized storm. Sound spoke to Nicolae. As a teenager he became a minor celebrity in the local arcade for his ability for his ability to play Galaga blindfolded. He shattered high scores by listening for cues from the cabinet, dwelling on pregnant pauses between sound effects, listening for the timbre of the current passing through the machine to change just as an enemy was about to fire. The newspapers called him “Kid Galaga,” a title Pastore cherished his entire life. One night, while in a fever of music, Nicolae had a vision. He would build an instrument, a machine that could manipulate sound in three-dimensional space. He would sculpt sound rather than play it. He could fine-tune frequencies to allow him to accomplish whatever perversion of Space/Time he wished. He gave it a clinical name, as though to indicate the instrument was beyond mere music. He called it “The Interface.” He moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico to study under an amateur (some Earthers would say “kook”) scientist, who studied “acoustic levitation.” He interned in Santa Fe for several years before meeting his wife-to-be Piper Selig. After eloping with Piper, Nicolae moved to his wife’s childhood home in Mendocino, California. The couple had a pair of twins, Lex and Morgan. Today Nicolae works as a producer at a local radio station. His nights are spent trying to perfect the machine he saw in his vision all those years ago. He must never be allowed to complete it.  ACCESS NARRATIVE ›

Nicolae has worked in radio for years and even he hasn’t found the signal we layer under all radio stations, which is designed to keep people complacent while they drive. Success! Most haunting childhood memory: Eating a bug on a dare at summer camp. Most haunting teenage memory: Eating a goldfish on a dare at a homecoming party. When he perfects the Interface, Nicolae plans to sculpt his wife out of sound and give it to her as an anniversary gift. Ironically, Piper is very fed up with her husband’s distant, dismissive behavior. Their marriage may not last until their next anniversary. Nicolae made a VHS tape in 1990 documenting his attempt at a Galaga high score. Piper found this tape and screened it for his 40th birthday. Nicolae started to cry when he heard people in the arcade chanting his name. Cut himself on a B-sharp while playing his viola. He’ll show this scar to anyone who asks. Nicolae: His Family

Nicolae: His Family

Last modified by Charter Agent 3JE
Emerson Selig (Father-in-Law): Nicolae was initially uncomfortable around Emerson, who was inclined to go into long, ponderous rants about conspiracy theories and esoteric science. Over time, Nicolae learned that he and his father-in-law had complimentary scientific interests. Very dangerous for us. Jean Selig (Mother-in-Law) (Deceased): Jean couldn’t have been more pleased with her daughter’s choice of a husband, seeing her own marriage reflected in that of her daughter’s. Jean welcomed Nicolae into the family, as though she knew that her son-in-law and her husband would be scientific colleagues. Piper Pastore (Wife): Piper and Nicolae met in New Mexico. Piper was there on an “artist retreat” (it was more of an excuse for the alcoholic Piper to dry out). Nicolae’s distracted, daydreaming nature was a counter-balance to Piper, who often feels anxious and over-stimulated. Today, Nicolae’s absentmindedness and his obsession with sound research is starting to grate on Piper, who feels unappreciated. She may leave him. Let’s hope. Lucius Selig (Brother-in-Law): These two men will never get along. Nicolae saw through Lucius’ self-assured bravado almost immediately. He bit his tongue as Lucius founded the Power of Positive Mechanics church and started taking advantage of its followers. That tension may boil over now that the dispossessed Lucius is living in the family’s tiny Mendocino home. Lex and Morgan Pastore (Son and Daughter): The twins are cursed with a father who is enthusiastic enough to pass along his scientific obsessions like a disease, but who is distracted enough to not teach them discipline. Lex’s bizarre experiments on the pet hamster, Nimsesku, are all the evidence we need of this dynamic. The experiments are as unethical as they are highly developed. Morgan, for her part, senses that something is wrong with her parents’ marriage, but, as a ten-year-old, she doesn’t understand relationships enough to make sense of what she observes around the home. The young empath’s confusion doesn’t stop her from internalizing every drop of pain in the house. She lacks the vocabulary for such things, but she wishes to transmute the pain into something organic and lovely. Sentimental daydreaming. Not worth our attention for now.  ACCESS NARRATIVE ›
